When Is the Best Time to Move in Virginia?

There is no single month that is best for every move. The right time to move depends on what matters most to you: price, date availability, weather, school schedules or how much flexibility you have around closing and delivery.

Based on what Virginia Moving & Storage sees across Richmond, Central Virginia and Hampton Roads, the moving year generally falls into three different periods:

  • January through March: often favorable from a pricing standpoint

  • April through August: the busiest part of the moving season

  • September through November: often the best overall balance of weather, availability and pricing

When Are Moving Prices Usually Lower?

For VMS, January through March often provides some of the most favorable pricing opportunities. Demand is generally lower than during peak moving season, which can create better transportation capacity and pricing.

Interstate moves through North American Van Lines use yield-management pricing, meaning rates can change based on demand, available capacity, route and moving date. When demand is lower, there may be more pricing flexibility.

That does not mean every January move will cost less than every June move. Shipment weight, distance, packing, valuation, storage and access requirements still matter. But if your dates are flexible, the first quarter of the year can be worth considering. Learn more about our long-distance moving services.

What Is the Tradeoff With Moving in Winter?

The main disadvantage of January through March is weather. Winter storms can affect road conditions, loading and unloading, interstate transportation, delivery schedules and truck routing.

And weather does not have to occur in Virginia to affect your move. A shipment traveling from Richmond to another part of the country may encounter winter weather hundreds of miles away. Interstate movers have to monitor conditions across the entire transportation route, not just at the origin.

Is Summer Still the Busiest Moving Season?

Yes. Summer is still the busiest period for residential moving, although school schedules appear to be slightly less dominant than they were in the past. VMS generally considers April through August the core peak moving season.

Demand increases because of school breaks, home closings, military PCS activity, corporate relocations and customers trying to move before fall. As moving dates and transportation capacity fill, pricing can rise.

Does Booking Early Save Money?

It can. Because interstate pricing uses yield management, booking earlier may give you access to better available pricing before capacity becomes more limited.

For peak-season interstate moves, VMS generally recommends planning about four weeks ahead when possible. That is not a requirement, and moves can often be accommodated on shorter notice. However, starting earlier usually gives you more options. Request a moving quote when you are ready to compare dates.

Are the Beginning and End of the Month More Expensive?

They can be. VMS commonly sees increased demand around both the beginning and end of the month, when leases, home closings and other housing deadlines tend to cluster. Holidays can also create pricing pressure because customers often try to take advantage of additional days away from work.

Are Weekdays Cheaper Than Weekends?

Not necessarily anymore. Traditional advice often says Tuesday or Wednesday is automatically the best day to move. In practice, VMS does not see weekday versus weekend timing as a major universal pricing rule.

The bigger factors are usually time of year, route, shipment size, available capacity, beginning- and end-of-month demand, holidays and the specific requirements at origin and destination.

What Is the Best Time of Year Overall?

If a customer has complete flexibility and wants the best combination of weather, availability and pricing, VMS generally likes September through November. Demand has usually eased from summer, temperatures are often more comfortable, and winter weather has not yet become a major factor.

What About Hurricane Season?

Fall does come with one potential complication: hurricanes and tropical systems. Virginia and other East Coast markets can be affected by heavy rain, coastal flooding, road closures, evacuation traffic and delays elsewhere along an interstate route.

Even when a storm does not hit Richmond or Hampton Roads directly, transportation can be affected by conditions elsewhere. The same applies to other natural disasters around the country.

When Is Military Moving Season Busiest?

Military PCS activity contributes significantly to summer moving demand, especially in Hampton Roads. VMS regularly handles military household moves involving installations throughout Hampton Roads and the Richmond region.

Customers with military orders should communicate report dates, housing availability, storage needs, installation access requirements and any hard travel deadlines as early as possible.

So When Should You Move?

If your priority is pricing, January through March may provide opportunities. If your priority is weather and overall flexibility, September through November is often a strong choice. If you have to move between April and August, start planning early and expect more competition for popular dates.

The important thing is not finding a supposedly perfect moving day. It is understanding how your date affects pricing, availability, weather and transportation. Request a moving quote and VMS can help you compare the options for your move.
