Henrico History, Parks & Community Life

Henrico County combines a long colonial history with continued residential growth. Established in 1634 as one of the eight original shires of Virginia, Henrico curves around the City of Richmond to the west, north and east, and its communities range from established neighborhoods to newer planned developments. For households moving into western Henrico, that creates a wide range of residential settings, community layouts and things to do close to home.

Henrico's Colonial Origins

According to Henrico County, the name Short Pump comes from Short Pump Tavern, a stagecoach stop on the road to Virginia's western settlements whose yard well had an unusually short pump handle. Henrico is also one of only two Virginia counties that maintains its own road system. Additional history is available through Henrico County's Fun Facts about Henrico.

Civil War Landmarks and Historic Sites

Several 1862 Civil War battles, including Seven Pines, Savage's Station, Glendale and Malvern Hill, took place in Henrico County. Meadow Farm Museum at Crump Park in Glen Allen, a free county-run living-history farm that opened to the public in 1981, includes an 1810 farmhouse and presents the history of the people who lived and worked on the land.

Neighborhoods and Community Life

Western Henrico is known for planned communities such as Wyndham and Twin Hickory, newer neighborhoods around West Broad Village and Short Pump, and established neighborhoods in Tuckahoe and Lakeside. Henrico County Recreation & Parks operates recreation centers such as Deep Run Recreation Center, and the county's annual events include Glen Allen Day at Crump Park and the Henrico Holiday Express. Check the county calendar for current schedules and locations. The county's events calendar lists what is happening across Henrico.

Crump Park offers playgrounds, picnic shelters, open fields and a fishing pond alongside Meadow Farm Museum, and Short Pump Park and Deep Run Park serve western Henrico with park and recreation facilities. Short Pump Town Center anchors shopping and dining, and the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen hosts performances, classes and exhibits. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Henrico's Lakeside area grew from the former Bloemendaal Farm, the estate of philanthropist Grace Arents, and was founded in 1984.

Routes such as I-64, I-295, I-95 and Broad Street connect Henrico with Richmond and the surrounding counties. Travel time depends on the addresses, route and traffic.

Planning Your Henrico or Short Pump Move

Before requesting an estimate, note the rooms and larger items to be moved, stairs at both homes, driveway access and the distance between the truck and your door. For apartments and townhomes, ask your building manager about elevator reservations, loading areas and permitted moving hours. Tell us if your closing dates do not line up so packing, pickup and warehouse storage can be considered in the same plan. Local moving prices depend on the shipment, timing, access and services requested; ask for a personalized estimate rather than assuming a flat neighborhood rate.
