That is one reason we encourage customers to start planning early. Booking earlier does not guarantee that every move will be cheaper, but it usually provides more flexibility with dates and available capacity and can result in better pricing than waiting until the last minute.

Two Recent Interstate Moving Examples

Actual estimates help illustrate why there is no single meaningful average interstate moving price. A recent VMS estimate for a move from Midlothian, Virginia to Wisconsin involved a shipment of approximately 4,050 pounds. The total estimate was approximately $5,400, including the selected valuation coverage and little or no professional packing.

Another recent estimate involved a much larger shipment of approximately 20,300 pounds moving from the Hampton Roads area to North Carolina. That estimate was approximately $13,100 and included professional packing, additional services and selected valuation coverage.

These are examples of actual estimates, not advertised prices or guaranteed ranges. Two moves going similar distances can still have very different prices based on shipment weight, packing, access, valuation, storage needs, time of year and available transportation capacity. The best way to determine the cost of your move is to complete an actual survey of the household.

Why Interstate Delivery Is Usually a Window — Not One Exact Date

This is one of the most important differences between a local and an interstate move. On a local move, your belongings may leave your home in the morning and arrive at the destination later that day. Interstate transportation works differently. Your shipment may travel with other household shipments moving along a compatible route, which means delivery is generally quoted as a spread of dates rather than one guaranteed day.

• Carolinas and nearby destinations: approximately 1–2 days

• Midwest: approximately 3–6 days

• West Coast: potentially 5–15 days

These are general planning examples, not guaranteed transit times. Your actual delivery spread depends on the shipment, route, available capacity and other transportation factors.

Why a Smaller Shipment Can Have a Longer Delivery Spread

A larger household shipment can often move on a tighter schedule because it occupies a larger portion of the trailer. A smaller shipment may have a wider delivery window because the carrier must coordinate additional household shipments traveling along a compatible route to efficiently move the truck. That means a 4,000-pound shipment is not necessarily delivered faster than a 15,000- or 20,000-pound shipment just because there is less furniture.

If you have a firm closing date, lease deadline, travel schedule or military report date, tell your move consultant during the estimate. Get the Estimate Right — Everything Else Depends on It

The quality of an interstate moving plan begins with an accurate survey. Make sure your estimator sees everything that is moving, not just the main rooms in the house. Garages, attics, basements, sheds, outdoor furniture, closets and storage areas can materially change the shipment.

Also identify large or unusually heavy items, fragile pieces, stairs, elevators, long carries, gated entrances, restricted truck access, anything you plan to move yourself and anything you expect to add or remove before moving day. The goal is to build the transportation plan around the actual shipment rather than correcting the estimate once loading has already begun.

Moving Access in Richmond and Central Virginia

Moving conditions vary considerably throughout Richmond and the surrounding counties. Older neighborhoods such as the Fan, Museum District, Church Hill and other parts of the city can involve narrower streets, limited curb access, street parking, longer carries and situations where a large tractor-trailer cannot get close to the residence. Depending on the location, a smaller shuttle vehicle may be required to move the shipment between the residence and the interstate moving truck.

Partial Packing

Partial packing is very common. This gives customers a way to control some of the packing cost while still getting professional help with the parts of the house they would rather not handle.

Full Packing

Have a Storage Plan Before You Need One

Closing dates slip, new construction gets delayed and lease dates do not always line up perfectly with settlement dates. If your Virginia home must be vacated before the destination is ready, storage is much easier to coordinate when it is included in the original moving plan.

Keep Important Items With You

For an interstate move, assume you may not have immediate access to your primary shipment after leaving Virginia.
